MOULD TOXICITY: WHAT IS IT?

MOULD TOXICITY: WHAT IS IT?

The tricky thing with mould is that while some is visible to the human eye, often it is present in smaller, less obvious places in the home and contributing to a variety of health symptoms.

Mould exposure symptoms occur because of the mycotoxins released from fungi, exerting both local and systemic effects in the human body. Mycotoxins are microscopic mould metabolites that can cause harm, entering the body through ingestion, inhalation, and via the skin. Mould exposure can be both acute and chronic.

SYMPTOMS

While asthma and respiratory conditions are one of the most well-known manifestations of mould toxicity, most symptoms are associated with mycotoxins causing perturbation in the gut lining and altering the gut microbiota. This leads to a plethora of immune, endocrine and gut symptoms:

  • Food sensitivities, intolerances
  • Insufficient fibre intake
  • Allergies
  • Appetite and thirst changes
  • Bowel and urine frequency changes
  • Inflammation
  • Joint pain and stiffness
  • Mood disorders
  • Nasal congestion
  • Asthma
  • Light sensitivity
  • Dizziness
  • Headaches

Managing mould toxicity in the home is more complex than killing the surface mould with bleach and wiping it off the walls, and usually by the time it is growing on your wall there is a lot of it growing under the surface!

Natural Clinic Clinical Guide to Mould

Those that are more susceptible to mould toxicity:

  • Pre-existing autoimmunity

  • Females: Detoxification of mould spores competes for the estrogen detoxification pathways
  • Constipated individuals: reduced capacity to clear mould toxins through bowels
  • Those with fungal / candida overgrowth
  • Those with genetic variants affecting CYP450 enzyme pathways
  • Children
  • Asthmatics

How your diet plays a role

Following a diet that supports regular and healthy bowel motions is key to ensure that mould toxins can be effectively eliminated through the stool.

Maximising polyphenol- rich foods

Maximising your intake of polyphenol-rich fruits and vegetables to reduce inflammation and promote gut health: dark leafy greens, berries, citrus, cacao, orange and red vegetables.

Eat organic and biodynamic

Eating organic and biodynamic to maximise nutrient availability, and reduce burden on the liver (means the liver does not have to focus on detoxifying pesticides / herbicides).

Try a paleo, grain-free diet

For more chronic mould-toxicity, a paleo, grain-free diet is recommended to avoid mould contamination associated with grains.

Increase healthy fats

Increasing healthy fats on your plate to reduce any inflammation in the gut: extra-virgin olive oil, ghee, avocados, walnuts, macadamias, wild-caught fish.

Pharmaceutical and conventional treatments for mould toxicity

  • Antifungal medications
  • Echinocandins
  • Amphotericin B lipid complex therapy

Natural treatments to manage mould exposure & toxicity

The primary essential nutrient for any case of mould exposure. Mycotoxins deplete glutathione levels, which our body requires to eliminate the mycotoxins (vicious cycle). NAC stimulates the body to produce glutathione naturally, increasing your abundance of this potent antioxidant. NA C is one of the only agents that can bind the mycotoxins and spores in the lungs as well as assist in the elimination of these byproducts.

nutrient & herbal blend that supports every detoxification pathway in the liver to support elimination of mycotoxins and spores from the body. Phytonutrients provide strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects to reduce impacts of mould toxicity in the gut.

strengthens the intestinal wall barrier by effectively removing mycotoxins and intestinal irritants from the intestinal tract, without binding to beneficial nutrients.

Mycotoxins wreak havoc on our immune system and essentially induce an immunosuppressive effect on the body. Vitamin D3 & K2 is essential to rebuild your immune system, prevent autoimmunity and reduce inflammation as a result of mould exposure.
