CAUSES AND TRIGGERS

Nutritional deficiencies, gut imbalances, heavy metals, prenatal trauma all predispose a child to ADHD symptoms.

Gluten, corn, & dairy intolerance in particular are highly aggravating for ADHD

Exacerbates hyperactivity, upregulates inflammation in the gut and brain to worsen ADHD symptoms

Bacterial and yeast overgrowth in the gut is highly correlated with ADHD and neurotransmitter imbalances

Increased activity of inflammatory cytokines is associated with ADHD development in both children and adults

Excessive metals are highly neurotoxic and are damaging to our regular neurodevelopmental processes.

Higher toxic load is associated increased risk of ADHD and poorer mental health outcomes.

Depletes levels of B6, zinc and magnesium which affects & hijacks regular neurotransmitter production.

Zinc, vitamin D3, essential fatty acids, and iron are all essential nutrients for healthy serotonin and dopamine production, as well as thyroid hormone production which has a direct influence on brain function.

High levels of copper and metals cause imbalances in the copper/ zinc ratio which can cause ADHD and neurotoxic symptoms.

How your diet plays a role

High protein diet

Increasing consumption of good quality protein, including grass-fed organic meat, eggs and legumes will provide essential amino acids to support healthy neurotransmitter pathways.

Wide variety of prebiotic foods

Chicory root, dandelion root, garlic, Jerusalem artichoke, leeks and asparagus are all great prebiotic foods that help to feed good bacteria in the gut. Healthy intestinal bacteria will support serotonin production via synthesis in the gut.

Healthy fats

Increase consumption of healthy fats including avocado, ghee, grass-fed meats, walnuts, & chia seeds to maximise essential fatty acid intake which will reduce inflammation in the gut and brain.

Avoiding gluten

Avoiding wheat products will be key to reducing and managing ADHD symptoms in both children and adults.

Avoiding simple, refined carbohydrates

Excluding processed, store-bought sweets and products will significantly reduce sugar consumption that commonly exacerbates mood swings and hyperactivity in ADHD.

Avoiding artificial colours & flavourings

These additives increase hyperactivity and worsen ADHD scores, particularly in children, so should be avoided wherever possible. Eating natural, wholefoods is one of the best ways to ensure you are avoiding artificial colours & flavourings.

Pharmaceutical and conventional treatments for ADHD

  • Adderall XR (amphetamine)
  • Concerta (methylphenidate)
  • Ritalin (Methylphenidate)
  • Dexedrine (amphetamine)

Natural treatments to manage your ADHD

Containing Lactobacillus & Bifidobacterium species

Omega-3 fatty acids to boost dopamine synthesis & reduce hyperactivity + impulsivity

Zinc + B6 combination to improve behaviour and decrease symptoms of anxiety & aggression

Ginkgo & Brahmi combination to support learning & retention of information, & boost concentration.
