This formula is a variant of the formula that was originally devised by Li Gao (a.k.a. L. Dong- yuan) in 1249. This original formula was directed towards Blood stasis and Wind (or Wind-Damp) invasion of the Intestines, in addition to Intestinal Dryness. The formula was subsequently revised by Shen Jin-ao (a.k.a. Shen Qian-lu) some 500 years later. This newer version omitted an ingredient and included others to regulate the Qi and to nourish the Kidney Yin-Essence and Blood in order to moisten the Intestines. This is more in keeping with the contemporary TCM approach, which describes four main factors in its pathogenesis:
This variant is closer to the later version of this formula. It has been enhanced with the addition of oily seeds which may promote laxation by moistening the Intestines and regulating the Qi. In addition, the formula has been changed with herbs which may enrich the Kidney and nourish the Blood, in order to moisten and harmonise the intestines. It should be noted that, as this formula focuses mostly on the secondary aspects (biao) of this disorder, an appropriate tonifying formula may also be required in cases with marked deficiency as the primary aspect (ben).
